Florida's Sea Turtles
There are five species of sea turtle found along Florida's beaches. Learn more below!
LOGGERHEAD
The Loggerhead is the most common sea turtle in Florida. It is named for its massive block-like head. Loggerheads are large in size and have powerful jaws that aid it in crushing the clams and crabs that it eats.
LEATHERBACK
The Leatherback is our largest sea turtle. In general, it dives deeper, travels farther, and tolerates cold temperatures better than any other type of sea turtle.
GREEN
The Green is unique among turtles for being mostly vegetarian, subsisting on sea grasses and algae. It is named for the greenish color of its fat deposits and was once highly prized among European settlers.
HAWKSBILL
The Hawksbill is best known for its beautiful and intricate shell patterns. It has an oval-shaped body with a narrow head, and raptor-like jaws.
KEMP'S RIDLEY
The Kemp's Ridley is the rarest sea turtle in the world, and the most endangered. It is small, tough, and tenacious, and has only one known major nesting beach, located on the Gulf Coast of Mexico.
