Sea Turtle Nesting Season

May through October

As spring turns to summer in Flagler County, we welcome one of the most magical times of year along our coastline—sea turtle nesting season! From May through October, our beaches become a critical nesting ground for several species of sea turtles, including Loggerheads, Green Turtles, Leatherbacks, and even the rare Kemp’s Ridley.

Every year, mother turtles return to our shores under the cover of darkness to lay their eggs in the warm sand. About two months later, hatchlings emerge and make their incredible journey to the sea—guided by instinct and moonlight.

How you can help:

Protecting these incredible creatures starts with awareness and action.

  • Keep beaches clean and flat—fill in holes, knock down sandcastles, and remove beach furniture at night.

  • Turn off lights visible from the beach after dark to avoid disorienting turtles.

  • Respect marked nests and give any nesting turtles or hatchlings plenty of space.

  • Report sea turtle activity to local patrols if you spot something unusual.

Get involved!

Want to make a difference this season?

Volunteer with Flagler Turtle Patrol or adopt a nest to directly support conservation efforts right here in your community. Together, we can help ensure that these ancient mariners return year after year.
